Everything on... Burnley

All you need to know about Saturday's visitors.

Fri 14 December 2018, 17:00|Tottenham Hotspur

We head into Saturday’s game on an eight-match unbeaten run against Burnley, who hauled themselves out of the bottom three with a 1-0 home victory over Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend.

We took four points off the Clarets last season, drawing 1-1 at Wembley Stadium before winning 3-0 at Turf Moor with Harry Kane scoring a hat-trick.

Here’s everything you need to know about our opponents this weekend...

Team news

Burnley have injury doubts over midfielder Steven Defour (calf) and winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson, who picked up a hamstring strain in the win over Brighton.

Defender Stephen Ward has not featured since September following knee surgery while goalkeeper Nick Pope is back in training after suffering a dislocated shoulder in July.

One to watch

Burnley caught many off guard when they swooped to sign Joe Hart in the summer and they have been quickly rewarded with a string of impressive performances from the England goalkeeper.

Born in Shrewsbury, Hart first played for his hometown club as a 17-year-old in 2004 though he did not become their first-choice custodian until 2005/06. He moved to Manchester City at the end of that season for just £100,000 and this proved an incredibly astute piece of business.

Hart would go on to make 348 appearances for City, winning two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups before loan stints at Torino and West Ham. He played for England at three major tournaments and currently has 75 caps.

Previous clash

We travelled to Burnley in December last year looking to respond to a disappointing 4-1 defeat at Manchester City in our previous league game and did just that with a comprehensive 3-0 victory at Turf Moor.

Kane proved to be our match winner, scoring the first of two hat-tricks in four days that ensured he surpassed Alan Shearer’s record of 36 Premier League goals in a calendar year. His first came from the penalty spot after Kevin Long had fouled Dele Alli before two driven finishes after the break drew him level with Shearer’s landmark.

It proved to be the start of a fruitful period for us in the Premier League as we embarked on a 14-match unbeaten run featuring 11 victories.

Burnley’s form

The Clarets’ 1-0 win against Brighton last Saturday brought an end to a dreadful run that had seen them take just a single point from seven league games.

They had started the Premier League campaign equally sluggishly, picking up only one point from their first five matches as they tried to juggle league commitments with their first European campaign since 1960/61.

Respite came in the form of seven points from three games, including a 4-0 win at home to Bournemouth and 2-1 success at Cardiff City in late September into early October, though they were defeated by Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup during that spell.

Magic moment

26 September, 2009, turned out to be a special date in Robbie Keane’s career as he scored four times in our 5-0 home victory against Burnley.

‘Keano’ struck from the penalty spot early on and Jermaine Jenas (33) added a second but it was not until the final 16 minutes that the Irishman really put the visitors to the sword.

Aaron Lennon set up Keane for his second with 16 minutes left and the hat-trick was not long in arriving following a fine pass from Tom Huddlestone. There was still time for one more as Keano squeezed his fourth of the game through the legs of Brian Jensen.

Played for both

Aaron Lennon was a hugely popular player during his nine-and-a-half-year spell at White Hart Lane following his transfer from Leeds United in 2005.

A tricky winger with a devastating turn of pace, he was thrust into the first team at the age of 18 and quickly caught the eye. He was nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award in both the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons then won the League Cup when we overcame Chelsea 2-1 in the 2008 final.

He starred as we qualified for, then played in, the Champions League for the first time and stayed at Spurs until he joined Everton in 2015, ending his time here on 367 appearances.

Capped 21 times by England, Lennon joined Burnley in January, 2018, and has played in all bar one of their 16 Premier League games this term.

What they’re saying

Clarets boss Sean Dyche said: “We know we face a tough game at Tottenham, and we will possibly change the side again because we have done some work this week, so we’ll see.

“But I want us to take the basics into this performance and yet still have the freedom to open up and show what we can do.

“I know Mauricio (Pochettino) works (his team) very hard and he has a very clear view of what he wants.

“They are wiser, but they are human beings and sometimes there is a drop-off in the second game in a week. But we can’t rely on that, so we have to go down there and do the basics well.”
