Mathys Tel: “It’s a step forward – I can still do better”
You felt a big Mathys Tel moment would arrive any minute – it arrived with a bang at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
The winger scored a goal to remember on one of the biggest stages to secure not only a huge win for players, fans and the club alike, but much-deserved victory after a Premier League derby we’d dominated.
We led 1-0 with three minutes remaining when Mathys picked up the ball in our half and took off, sprinting away from Josh Acheampong before cutting across Maxence Lacroix and firing low into the corner from 22 yards.
It was a thing of beauty to cap an evening to remember in SW6 - Mathys delivering on an occasion that meant so much.
“I’ve worked a lot on areas I had to work on,” a typically humble Mathys told us afterwards. “Today, it’s a step forward. As a team, it’s a step forward, but also for myself. I'm very happy about my performance today. I think that I can still do better. I can always do better. I need to work, work, work, work and keep going.”
Mathys was delighted to be part of what Roberto De Zerbi called ‘a complete performance’.
“I was very happy about the way we played,” he added. “We showed that even if it's a big team in front of us, we can play, we can keep the ball, we can stay calm on the ball.
“We have a lot of qualities in this team. The manager already told everybody that there is quality. We just needed time to create something together and I think that today is a step forward.
"We have to be humble and keep going, but I'm very happy, very, very happy!”
