'We want to stay on this path' - Nilden on impressive WSL start

Amanda Nilden was full of praise for our free-flowing goalscoring start to the Women’s Super League campaign.

Although we are only just four games into the 2026/27 league campaign, we have already netted an impressive 15 goals – 11 of those coming in our last two fixtures – as we currently sit as the competition’s leading goalscorers.

Our strong run of form in front of goal hasn’t just come from one or two individuals either, it has been spread throughout the team with eight different goalscorers to date – and Amanda even got herself on the scoresheet last month at Selhurst Park in our 7-0 win over Crystal Palace.

We can’t lose focus on excellent displays at the other end of the pitch, though, with four consecutive clean sheets in all competitions now – and the Sweden international has been at the heart of that with a new role at centre-back.

Ensuring efforts are being kept out of our net, conceding only twice in the WSL so far, Amanda heaped plenty of praise on the players further up the pitch for their outstanding start.

“We have really reached our levels early this season,” Amanda told us, speaking exclusively for this weekend’s matchday programme. “We have kept working from last year on how we want to be on the pitch and the attacking football we want to play, and I think in these games at the start of the season, we have really got the results.

“Even from the back, to be able to play out from all types of pressures, we have improved a lot. Also, to just see all the combinations higher up on the pitch is nice for us as defenders. I'm very proud of the start and the players.

“We have won three, we had one draw, but it's a great way to start the season. It's just exciting now for all games coming up, and we just want to stay on this path, keep building, and hopefully we can do that.”

For the final time before the international break, we will be back in front of our Lilywhite fanbase at Brisbane Road and Amanda spoke on the impact our supporters have had in our tremendous start – including the travelling support at Liverpool and Crystal Palace.

“For us, the fans mean everything,” she added. “That's why you play football, to celebrate with the fans, to make them happy and to make them feel what we feel on the pitch.

“Even in the away games, it's been incredible that so many people show up, and hopefully more can come now when we also perform and we show that we play really attractive football. It's massive and, for us, that gives us more energy on the pitch.”

Another edition of our official matchday programme will be on sale at Sunday’s game, including a main feature interview with defender Amanda Nilden.
