Internationals | Draw for Micky and JP, defeat for Ben

Micky van de Ven and Jan Paul van Hecke helped the Netherlands to secure a late draw in their Nations League opener with Germany on Thursday night.

In their first game under Head Coach Xavi, the Netherlands thought they had taken an early lead through a Virgil van Dijk header from a corner, only to see it ruled out before Germany did take the lead with Felix Nmecha on target in Amsterdam.

But it wasn't going to be the perfect start for new Germany boss Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo struck in the final few minutes of the game to see the points shared.

Our Dutch defensive duo played the full 90 minutes each with Micky picking up his 25th cap while it was JP's 17th.

Next up for the Netherlands is a trip to Serbia on Sunday (27 September).

Elsewhere, Ben Davies captained Wales as they suffered a narrow defeat to Portugal in their Nations League opener.

Ben started the game in Lisbon to make his 101st appearance for his country but it was ultimately a disappointing night with the sole goal of the game - a strike from Joao Felix on 22 minutes - diverted in off the defender's shin.

Despite falling behind, Craig Bellamy's side were bright on the night at the home of Sporting CP and almost equalised late in the second half when cult hero Brennan Johnson sent an effort off the crossbar before Ruben Dias made a superb block on the line.

Next up for Wales is a trip to Denmark on Sunday (27 September).

Also in the Nations League, Kevin Danso, who is on loan at Sunderland this season, played the full 90 minutes as Austria ran out 3-1 winners over Israel.

In the younger age groups, Oscar Sandiford started while Phoenix Offiah was a late substitute as England Under-18s edged Colombia in their first outing in the Friendship Cup in Switzerland.

Earlier in the day, Rodrigo Bentancur captained Uruguay as they fell to a 3-1 friendly defeat to Japan.
