Three to watch | West Ham United Women
For the 2026/27 Women’s Super League, we’ll select three players from our opponents to look out for.
Our opening game of the WSL campaign sees us take on West Ham United at Brisbane Road (kick-off 12noon). The Hammers finished 10th last season after a much-improved second half of the season, with Rita Guarino eyeing for more improvement in her first full term as the Head Coach.
Laia Codina
The Spain international arrived in east London this summer following three campaigns at Arsenal. A decorated individual on the domestic and international stage, the centre-back has won the UEFA Women’s Champions League three times – in her spells with the Gunners and Barcelona – plus the Spanish league title on three occasions and the Subway Players Cup while, for Spain, she played an integral role in their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup success. Describing herself as an aggressive player upon joining the Hammers, one of her main strengths is the composure on the ball in the build-up phase – a part of her game that she has brought to England from growing up in Barcelona.
Katie Zelem
Having initially joined the Hammers on loan from London City Lionesses in January, 2026, the experienced midfielder made her move permanent this summer. A player that can operate anywhere in the midfield, who is comfortable playing on both feet, the England international has racked up an impressive 135 appearances in the Women’s Super League across her spells with Liverpool, Manchester United, London City Lionesses and West Ham United, winning the league twice with Liverpool at the beginning of her career. The 30-year-old also boasts leadership skills on the pitch, previously captaining Manchester United to the Women’s FA Cup trophy in 2024.
Kelly Gago
Another signing that has arrived at West Ham United this summer. The France international made the move to east London after 18 months in the Women’s Super League with Everton, where she scored 10 goals in 30 games. A physical and powerful striker, whose pace can cause chaos amongst defenders, Gago made an impact in at St Etienne – the second club in her career – scoring 44 goals across her five seasons at the French club, helping them to promotion to the Premiere Ligue in 2020/21. Having represented her nation at the UEFA Women’s Euro in 2025, the 27-year-old links up with international team-mate Viviane Asseyi and will certainly add another goalscoring threat to the Hammers’ frontline.
