Winning goalscorer Emmanuel Sonupe hailed a “brilliant effort” from our Under-21s after Monday night’s 1-0 victory over Chelsea.
The wide man popped up in the box to smash home his second goal of the season following substitute Daniel Akindayini’s 89th-minute ball in from the left.
Goalkeeper Luke McGee was in fine form at the other end as we made a winning start to a busy week in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League, with a further test to come away at Liverpool on Friday evening.
“I saw Dan running down the left and obviously today we were playing with a false nine so there was no-one in the box,” said Emmanuel, explaining his goal against the Blues.
“I anticipated it would come to me in the box and luckily it fell for me and I put it in the top corner.
“I thought we were good in the first half but in the second half we definitely pinned them back more and controlled the game a bit more.
“It was a brilliant effort from the lads and now it’s onto another one at Liverpool. We just have to go again and hopefully get the same result.”
