Davies and Wimmer swap shirts after Vienna draw

The Club team-mates swapped international shirts after both started an important World Cup qualifying match early in Group D of the UEFA qualifying process for the finals in Russia in 2018.

Kevin lined-up for his second senior start and fifth cap for Austria in a left-back role in the EarnstHappelStadion while Ben started cap number 27 for Wales.

It was a key fixture because both teams are expected to challenge for top spot. Austria won their qualifying group for the European Championships with nine wins and a draw in 10 games while Wales reached France with just one loss in finishing second behind Belgium and of course went on to reach the semi-finals.

In the end, it was honours even. Kevin was unfortunate to score an own goal as Wales led twice but a double from Stoke's MarkoArnautovic saw the match end 2-2.

Speaking exclusively to us from Vienna, Kevin said: "It was a very good feeling to play against Ben because we are good mates and I think the draw is a good result for us.

"I saw him before the game, we also had a chat afterwards and we swapped our shirts."

As for playing left-back, Kevin added: "It was a bit unusual but I played this position a few times when I was in Cologne and also in the Under-21 set-up for Austria. Of course, it was a very special feeling to be back in the starting 11 and representing my country."

Thursday's action

As we reported yesterday, Heung-Min Son's fine form continued as he hit the winner for South Korea against Qatar in Asia World Cup qualifying. South Korea won 3-2 in Suwon.

Josh Onomah was an unused substitute as England Under-21s secured their spot at next summer’s Euro Finals with a game to spare, after a 1-0 victory over Kazakhstan in Aktobe.

Meanwhile, overnight, ErikLamela was an unused substitute as Argentina drew 2-2 with Peru in South American World Cup qualifying. Argentina are currently fifth of 10 teams at the half-way stage - the top four teams go straight to Russia.
