Internationals - Tuesday action
The final round of fixtures in Euro 2016 qualifying took place on Tuesday (October 13) – and it was a successful night for our lads once again.
Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld both played 90 minutes for Belgium as they won 3-1 at home to Israel in Group B, with Nacer Chadli an unused substitute.
Ben Davies and Wales also claimed three points in the same group, seeing off Andorra 2-0. It was the cherry on the cake for the Welsh side, who secured their place at the finals of a major tournament for the first time since 1958 over the weekend.
In qualifying for the 2018 World Cup, Erik Lamela went on as a 68th-minute substitute for Argentina as they drew 0-0 away to Paraguay in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday, October 14).
Elsewhere, on-loan DeAndre Yedlin put in a full shift for the US national team in their 1-0 friendly defeat to Costa Rica in Harrison, New Jersey.
It was a busy Tuesday for England’s youth sides, too, with Eric Dier helping England Under-21s register a 3-0 home win over Kazakhstan in a European qualifier in Coventry.
Eric (pictured, below) won an important header that led to Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek netting the Young Lions’ first goal of the game – the 21-year-old going on to complete the full match.
There was no such luck for England Under-20s, though, as they narrowly missed out on winning the Mercedes-Benz Elite Cup with a 1-0 defeat to host nation Germany. Harry Winks and Nathan Oduwa went on as substitutes in the 65th and 78th minutes respectively.
Kyle Walker-Peters and Josh Onomah both featured for England Under-19s as they battled out a goalless draw with Italy in a European qualifier. Full-back Kyle completed the full game while midfielder Josh was introduced as a 68th-minute substitute.
Elsewhere, in qualifying for the European Under-21 Championships, Milos Veljkovic played 90 minutes for Serbia Under-21s in a 2-0 victory in Lithuania while Kenny McEvoy was an unused substitute for Republic of Ireland Under-21s as they lost 1-0 away to Italy.
Meanwhile, young centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers helped the US Under-23 side register a 2-0 win over Canada in the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship third place play-off to keep their chances of getting to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio alive. They’ll now face Colombia in a play-off in March for the right to participate in the tournament.
