Spurs Diary - September

1    THURSDAY

1906    Arthur Rowe born in Tottenham. He would join us as a player in 1923 and is our manager when we win the title in 1951.

2012    Mousa Dembele (pictured, above) makes his Spurs debut as substitute at home to Norwich City and scores in the 1-1 draw.

2    FRIDAY

Luke McGee’s 21st birthday.

1978    We go down 7-0 at Liverpool! Moving on...

1992    We gain our first win in the newly-formed Premier League with a 2-0 home success over Sheffield United. Teddy Sheringham and Gordon Durie are our goalscorers.

3    SATURDAY

1920    Les Medley born in Edmonton. He would start with us as an amateur in 1935 and go on to become a full England international.

1988    Paul Gascoigne makes his Spurs debut in a 2-2 draw at former club Newcastle United.

4    SUNDAY

1899    We mark the official opening of White Hart Lane with a 4-1 friendly win over Notts County. David Copeland scores a hat-trick for us.

1937    Les Allen born in Dagenham and would join us from Chelsea in September, 1954. Happy birthday Les!

5    MONDAY

1992    Andy Turner becomes our youngest ever league player when he makes a goalscoring debut as substitute in our 2-1 home win against Everton, aged 17 years 166 days.

2000    Sergei Rebrov (two – one penalty) scores his first goals for Spurs in a 3-2 home win over Everton.

6    TUESDAY

1978    Scots Neil McNab and John Duncan play their final games for Spurs in a League Cup second round replay at home to Swansea City. We lose 3-1.

1988    Swansea again but this time a benefit game for Michael Hughes at the Vetch. Substitutes Phil Gray and David Howells both score in our 3-0 win.

7    WEDNESDAY

1985    Goalkeeper Ray Clemence plays the 1,000th senior match of his career in a 5-1 home win over Newcastle United in the First Division. John Chiedozie (pictured, below) scores twice.

1996    We again entertain Newcastle – but lose 2-1 in the Premier League.

8    THURSDAY

1990    A Gazza hat-trick in a 3-0 home win over Derby County.

2004    Three Spurs players – Ledley King, Paul Robinson and Jermain Defoe – play for England in Poland. Defoe scores his first England goal in the 2-1 win.

9    FRIDAY

1897    We beat the Royal Scottish Fusiliers 12-0 in a home friendly. Jimmy Davidson scores four with hat-tricks for Bill Joyce and Tom Meade.

2006    Debuts for Pascal Chimbonda and Hossam Ghaly at champions to be Manchester United. We lose by the only goal.

10    SATURDAY

STOKE CITY v SPURS, Premier League, at bet365 Stadium, 3pm

Joe Pritchard’s 20th birthday.

1932    Two goals apiece for Hunt and Willie Evans as we head for promotion from Division Two with a 6-1 home win over Manchester United.

2011    Scott Parker and Emmanuel Adebayor make their Spurs debuts in a 2-0 home win over Wolves. Ade marks his first start with one of our goals. Jermain Defoe also scores.

11    SUNDAY

1965    Roy Low becomes the first ever substitute used by Spurs, following their introduction by the league, when he replaces Derek Possee in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal at White Hart Lane.

2002    After an unbeaten start, we are knocked off our top of the table perch when we lose 3-2 at Fulham.

12    MONDAY

1959    Dave Mackay scores his first Spurs goal in our 5-1 Division One triumph over Manchester United at Old Trafford. Bobby Smith hits two.

2009    Jermain Defoe (pictured, below) gives us a first minute lead but we go down 3-1 at home to Manchester United.

13    TUESDAY

2001    We begin our journey to the League Cup Final with a 2-0 third round win over Torquay United at the Lane. Ledley King and Les Ferdinand score.

2015    Heung-Min Son makes his Spurs debut at Sunderland. Ryan Mason hits our late winner.

14    WEDNESDAY

SPURS v MONACO, UEFA Champions League, Group E, at Wembley Stadium, 7.45pm

1974    Terry Neill’s first game as Spurs manager. We beat West Ham United 2-1 at the Lane with goals from Mike England and Martin Chivers.

2010    Our first ever group game in the Champions League. We draw 2-2 at Werder Bremen.

15    THURSDAY

1900    We beat Chatham 5-0 in the Southern League at White Hart Lane but the result is expunged from the records as the Kent club resign from the league later that season. Sandy Brown scores three.

1984    Two goals apiece for Mark Falco and Clive Allen in a 5-0 home win over QPR. Micky Hazard also nets.

16    FRIDAY

1893    We lose 5-1 in a friendly at neighbours Enfield.

2012    Spurs debut for Clint Dempsey at Reading where Jermain Defoe bags a brace in our 3-1 win. Gareth Bale and his current Wales international team-mate Hal Robson-Kanu also score.

17    SATURDAY

2005    Spurs field a team of 11 full internationals for the first time ever in our 1-1 draw at Aston Villa.

2015    Heung-Min Son scores his first Spurs goals as we beat Qarabag 3-1 in the Europa League at the Lane.

18    SUNDAY

SPURS v SUNDERLAND, Premier League, at White Hart Lane, 4.30pm

2008    David Bentley (pictured, below) scores his first goal for Spurs as we beat Poland’s Wisla Krakow 2-1 in the UEFA Cup at White Hart Lane.

2011    Liverpool have two players sent off as we triumph 4-0 at home.

19    MONDAY

Kieran Trippier’s 26th birthday.

1896    We share 11 goals away to Millwall in the United League but lose 6-5, the first-ever meeting between the two clubs. Harry Crump and Willie Newbigging both score twice for us.

2013    Tromso dismissed 3-0 in the Europa League at the Lane. Two for Jermain Defoe and one for Christian Eriksen.

20    TUESDAY

1909    Nunhead hammered 9-0 on their own ground by Spurs in the London FA Charity Cup. Goals: Bobby Steel (4 – 1 pen), Bert Middlemiss (3), Billy Minter (2).

2015    Heung-Min Son grabs the only goal as we beat Crystal Palace at the Lane.

21    WEDNESDAY

SPURS v GILLINGHAM, EFL Cup, third round, at White Hart Lane, 8pm

1991    England striker Gary Lineker scores four goals for us in our 5-3 win at Wimbledon in the old First Division.

1994    We win 6-3 at Watford in a second round League Cup first leg tie. Jurgen Klinsmann hits a hat-trick.

22    THURSDAY

1934    Full-back Eddie King makes his Spurs debut in a 2-0 home defeat by Aston Villa but unfortunately suffers an injury that ends his career.

1971    We lift the Anglo-Italian League Cup following a 2-0 home win over Torino.

23    FRIDAY

1997    We become the first away team to score a goal at Bolton’s new Reebok Stadium where we draw 1-1. Chris Armstrong nets.

2012    Bobby Zamora scores for QPR at the Lane but we win 2-1 thanks to an own goal and a Jermain Defoe strike.

24    SATURDAY

MIDDLESBROUGH v SPURS, Premier League, at the Riverside Stadium, 3pm

1960    We set a Football League record with our 10th straight win at the start of the season, beating Aston Villa 6-2 at the Lane. John White scores twice.

2014    Michel Vorm’s (pictured, below) first Spurs start in a 3-1 home League Cup triumph over Nottingham Forest.

25    SUNDAY

1926    We beat West Brom 3-0 in the First Division at Tottenham, watched by Prince Feizal of Mecca.

1932    Double winger Terry Medwin born in Swansea and would join us from his home town club in April, 1956. Happy birthday Terry!

26    MONDAY

1908    Max Seeburg, who was born in Leipzig, becomes the first overseas player to represent Spurs – we lose by the only goal at Hull in Division Two.

2015    Toby Alderweireld bags his first Spurs goal to help us beat Manchester City 4-1 at home.

27    TUESDAY

CSKA MOSCOW v SPURS, UEFA Champions League, Group E, at Arena Khimki, 7.45pm

1895    Goalkeeper Alex Hunter born in Renfrew and would join us from Queen’s Park in May, 1920.

2014    Nacer Chadli gives us the lead in a 1-1 draw at Arsenal.

28    WEDNESDAY

1889    Westminster defeated 13-0 in a home friendly.

1983    After returning from Drogheda with a 6-0 UEFA Cup advantage, we complete the job by banging in another eight in the return.

29    THURSDAY

2010    We are awarded three penalties against FC Twente, score from two and win 4-1 at the Lane. Rafa van der Vaart misses his spot kick before being sent off! Nacer Chadli scores for the visitors.

2012    We win at Old Trafford for the first time in 23 years – and for the first time in the Premier League.

30    FRIDAY

1951    Goalkeeper Barry Daines born in Witham, Essex. He would join us as an apprentice in July, 1968.

1989    Gary Lineker hits a hat-trick in a 3-2 home win over QPR.
