Hugo optimistic as France count down to the Euros

Hugo Lloris believes France have targets on their backs going into the delayed Euro 2020 finals, but hopes to use the memory of their World Cup success in 2018 to lift another international trophy.

Captain of club and country, Hugo led Les Bleus to the ultimate prize in football in the last major tournament three years ago.

Forced to wait an additional 12 months to kick off the Euros in the wake of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, the experienced stopper says his nation will be one of the teams to beat this summer, but he’s confident they can still carry over an element of momentum as they enter an extremely competitive group campaign against Germany, Hungary and their conquerors in the final of Euro 2016, Portugal.

Hugo Lloris on duty for France

“It’s the target for the French national team to keep the momentum, but obviously it’s going to be difficult,” Hugo told us.

“We are the team that everyone wants to beat but we have the quality and we have the mentality. We have a tough group to begin with so it will be important for us to start the tournament well.”

Moussa Sissoko joins Hugo in the France squad, with one more friendly to come at home to Bulgaria on Tuesday before they begin their campaign against Germany on 15 June.

“Playing Germany, Hungary and Portugal, it’s not an easy one, but game by game we’re going to try to build our confidence into this tournament,” added the goalkeeper.

“Then we know that after the group stage, it’s another tournament that starts and in one game, anything is possible and you try to give yourselves all the chances to go through.”
