App exclusive: Wolfsberger v Spurs - the numbers
Ahead of tonight’s Europa League round of 32 meeting with Wolfsberger AC, we take a look at the key numbers behind the game.
Spurs v Austrian sides
We remain unbeaten in competitive games against Austrian opposition. In our history, we have faced three different sides from the central European nation, winning four of those six games, drawing the other two.
In our run to UEFA Cup glory in 1984, we faced FK Austria Wien in the quarter-finals of the competition. In the first leg, we earned a 2-0 win at White Hart Lane with Steve Archibald and Alan Brazil on the scoresheet before sealing our spot in the semi-finals with a 2-2 draw in the Austrian capital two weeks later - Brazil was once again on the scoresheet while Ossie Ardiles got our second that night.
Then, in 1991, we claimed a 2-0 aggregate win against SV Stockerau over the two legs of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup preliminary round. We won both legs 1-0 with Gordon Durie on target in the away leg before Gary Mabbutt hit the back of the net in north London.
Most recently, we met LASK in this season’s Europa League group stages. In our meeting at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, we overcame the Austrian side 3-0 - an own goal as well as strikes from Lucas and Heung-Min Son giving us all three points. In the away encounter, an end-to-end match produced a 3-3 draw. Again, Sonny was on target while Gareth Bale and Dele also scored, both from the penalty spot.
Wolfsberger AC have never faced an English opponent in a competitive fixture while, with this evening's game taking place in Hungary, this will be the first time either side has played a UEFA match in the eastern European nation.
Highlights: Spurs 3-0 LASK (22.10.20)
Wolfsberger’s journey
Finishing second in Group K, Wolfsberger progressed past both Feyenoord and CSKA Moscow to reach the knockout phase. This will be their first ever knockout game in European football. In the group stages, they suffered just two defeats - both coming against eventual group winners Dinamo Zagreb. Meanwhile, they earned three victories, including a standout 4-1 triumph away to Feyenoord, and finished with 10 points in total from their six games. Their matchday six 1-0 home victory over the Dutch side was their first triumph on their own turf in the competition after six attempts.
Wolfsberger’s recent form
WAC have lost just twice in their last 10 games. That run has included four wins and two draws in their last eight league games - results which have lifted them to sixth in the Austrian Bundesliga. However, they have lost two of their last four games in the competition, including a 3-0 home defeat by LASK - the side we faced in our Europa League group stage campaign.
Spurs in the round of 32
This will be our sixth appearance in the Europa League round of 32. We have progressed on three occasions (Lyon 3-2 agg - 2013, Dnipro 3-2 agg – 2014 and Fiorentina 4-1 agg - 2016) while in both 2015 and 2017, we exited at this stage at the hands of Fiorentina (3-1 agg) and Gent (3-2 agg) respectively. In our history in the UEFA Europa League, we are yet to win an away leg of a knockout game (D4 L5), while in the round of 32 specifically, our away record stands at drawn two, lost three.
