Waddle on Sonny: ‘Class is permanent! He’s absolutely marvellous”

It has been somewhat a frustrating campaign for Heung-Min Son so far, but Spurs legend Chris Waddle believes the forward’s brace at Preston last Saturday shows why his class will always shine through.

Despite having won last term’s Premier League Golden Boot with 23 top flight strikes, this season has been a difficult one for our number seven with him having headed into the new year with just five goals to his name in all competitions.

At Deepdale though, as we took on Preston North End in the fourth round of the FA Cup, Sonny produced a man-of-the-match performance, scoring two fine goals in Lancashire as we earned a comprehensive 3-0 win – and his impressive display did not go unnoticed in the press box where a certain Mr Waddle was watching on.

A world-beater on his day himself throughout a remarkable career, which included making over 200 appearances and an FA Cup Final appearance across a four-year stint in lilywhite, our attacking midfielder spoke to us after the game to give us his thoughts on our South Korean star's imposing performance at Deepdale.

“Class is permanent,” Chris, who had covered the game for BBC 5 Live, smiled at Deepdale. “You will have your dip. Everybody has a season or a part of a season where you think it wasn’t quite as good as last season.

"People forget these guys play a lot of football. You know, Son travels back to Korea to play for South Korea, he’s captain, he’s been in a World Cup, he comes back and yes, he’s not had the best of seasons so far, but he certainly showed what he can do tonight (Saturday 28 January vs Preston) – he can just always produce something.

“You have to say, the game was crying out for a goal, and he produced two wonderful goals which we know he is capable of. You know, it’s not a shock. When he does something like that and people say to me, ‘what a goal by Son’… I expect it from him, and I think the Tottenham fans do. He has that in his locker.

“He's a wonderful talent, a very unselfish player, works hard for the team, looks a very dedicated footballer and, in his time at Tottenham, he has been absolutely marvellous.”
