Our Stadium at 5: Sonny 'happiest guy in the world' after historic strike
On this day, five years ago, Heung-Min Son wrote his name into Spurs folklore as he became the first ever goalscorer for the Club's Men's First Team at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
On 3 April, 2019, our now captain struck gold in our opening game at our new home as he fired in clinically on 55 minutes to give us the lead against Crystal Palace before Christian Eriksen wrapped up the historic win and night on 80 minutes with our second in the 2-0 triumph.
Having also scored his first Premier League goal for the Club against the Eagles, the poignancy of the moment wasn't lost on our forward - who has now made 400 appearances in Lilywhite - as we enjoyed the perfect first outing at our world-class home.
Here is how he reflected on that historic night back in 2019 as he spoke to Spurs TV straight after the match...
“It feels amazing,” he said on an emotional night for everyone connected with Spurs. “I’m very proud to play in this shirt.
“I still remember when I scored my first Premier League goal at White Hart Lane, it was against Crystal Palace and now I score not such a beautiful goal but I think it's the most important goal for me.
“I feel proud of my team-mates, staff, fans and I just want to say thank-you for the amazing support and giving me the opportunity to play in this unbelievable stadium. It makes me happy. I’m the happiest guy in the world.”
Sonny had recently told us that his first Premier League goal against Palace was his favourite. Having written his name into Club folklore, had this goal now overtaken that one? He couldn’t make up his mind...
“Probably not! Of course, it’s a very special goal, but I think, since I joined Tottenham, this is even more special because... no, I can’t say, both goals mean such a lot, I can’t choose one, it’s very difficult!”
One thing Sonny was certain about was that the team deserved the three points against Palace, which ended a run of five without a win in the Premier League.
Our intent was underlined by racking up 26 attempts at goal with our new 17,500-capacity South Stand seemingly willing in that opener in the second half.
Sonny added: “We showed great character and mentality to go forward, dominate the game and create so many chances. There was just the moment to find the goal at the right time, we did that early in the second half and then created more chances. We deserved the three points.”
