Getting to know | Martin Ho

A 1-0 victory over West Ham United at Brisbane Road on the opening day of the weekend gave our new Head Coach a winning start to life in the Barclays Women's Super League.

Appointed on Friday (4 July), Martin put pen to paper on a contract that runs until 2028 after joining us from Norwegian side SK Brann where he spent the last 18 months.

In this month’s newsletter, we sit down for an exclusive interview with Martin Ho, giving you the chance to get to know him beyond the pitch.

What is your typically Sunday like without a match?

Martin: “It’s trying to relax, reading a book and maybe go out and get a coffee. It will mainly just be trying to relax and doing some mental therapy for myself. However, once time frees up a bit more and I get more settled into the area, hopefully I will start playing more golf on those days off.”

What was the first job you had?

Martin: “I worked in a sports leisure centre as a lifeguard and gym instructor.”

One thing fans would be surprised to know about you?

Martin: “I think so people might know from the surname, but I have Chinese heritage in my family on my dad’s side. That’s something that’s a big thing of my fabric as an individual in terms of what I expect, my standards, expectations and culture.”

Biggest idol?

Martin: “Kobe Bryant is probably the biggest one in terms of impact on the community and the social aspects, so he would be a big one. Then, more personal, my mum and dad for how they were role models with behaviours, attitude, personality and manners.”

Describe yourself in three words?

Martin: “Hardworking, passionate and demanding.”

Favourite cuisine?

Martin: “I would say Italian but it might have to be an Argentinian steak, actually.”

TV series or movies?

Martin: “Definitely movies, and I would say one of my favourites is Taken with Liam Neeson. TV series are difficult for me as I either need to be hooked on after the first episode or I won’t continue watching.”

Where do you like to visit in London?

Martin: “It would be pretty much anywhere in central London where I can see more of the heritage, the city and just see a lot more than you would see online through pictures or videos. It will take me a long time to visit all around there anyway.”

Favourite artist?

Martin: “Coldplay is a big one. Chris Martin, the music he writes has a meaning and a purpose, whether that’s personal or he’s writing about someone, there’s always a story behind it, so Chris and Coldplay are the band I always turn to and listen to.”
