Youth Profile - Joe Watson

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

At the end of another long, hard season, our young Academy players could be forgiven for looking forward to a nice relaxing break during the summer.

But Joe Watson, captain of our Under-17s side this term, knows he can't take it too easy in the close season otherwise he can expect a tough pre-season when they return in a couple of months.

"It has been quite hard in the last few weeks, I think we're all feeling the effects of the long season," says the 17-year-old London-born player. "I'm going to have a bit of a rest during the summer, but I'll make sure I keep my fitness levels up otherwise it will be a killer in pre-season again and I don't fancy that!"

Joe admits it's been a good second half of the season for the Under-17s, but he thinks there is room for improvement next term.

"We've certainly improved as a team since Christmas, we've got stronger almost game by game and played much better together in the last few months," says Joe. "We've had some good results, beating Arsenal at home was one of the highlights, and I think we probably played some of our best football in the last six games before the play-offs.

"Unfortunately we were unlucky in the play-offs though, we were in the lead in both our first two games but went on to lose them which ended our chances. That was disappointing."

One of Joe's qualities is his versatility. He can operate in midfield or in defence and has been used in both areas at various times during the campaign.

"I played quite a bit as a defensive midfielder, but I was also sometimes used in defence, either on the right of three centre halves or as a wing back. I quite like playing in a three, you can get forward a bit and I can push on even more as a wing back and get crosses in.

"I played for England Under-17s as a wing back about a year ago and I enjoyed it."

Joe already has an eye on next season and is hoping for more progression and development.

"Obviously I'm looking for a regular place in the Under-19s and perhaps a few matches for the Reserves," he says. "I've trained with the Reserves on a couple of occasions and this year, quite a few of the Under-19s played for them, so maybe I'll get my chance next season."

Coach's comments - Jimmy Neighbour

Joe has worked hard this year, played in a couple of different positions and has done reasonably well in both. As the season has gone on, he has certainly improved but he needs to keep working hard to improve his technique and his passing. He shows a good attitude in training and hopefully he will take the step up to the Under-19s in his stride.
