John McDermott believes the chance to play international football will be of tremendous benefit to Will Miller and Filip Lesniak.
The young duo, who have both played their part in our Under-18s’ fantastic start to the domestic season with seven wins out of seven, are now on duty with England and Slovakia respectively, with international fixtures fast approaching.
Attacker Will has earned his first call-up to the England Under-18s squad for their friendlies against Hungary at St George’s Park on Friday and Monday, while midfielder Filip is back in the Slovakia squad as they prepare for their FIFA Under-17 World Cup campaign in Abu Dhabi, which kicks-off with a Group A fixture against Brazil on October 17.
“I’m a huge advocate of tournament football, and a huge advocate of playing international games,” said John, our Academy Manager.
“The Premier League is an international league with international players, so as long as it’s managed and they’re not away all the time, I think the exposure to international football and international teams is a massive aid in the players’ development.”
John also saluted Will’s achievement in being called up to the England Under-18 squad for the first time, adding: “Will Miller’s going away with England – we’re really pleased with Will – and Felipe’s going away to the World Cup with Slovakia.
“Felipe’s played a number of times for his country, but this is Will’s first call-up so he’s done really well. The England team work really well with us.”
