Vivian Woodward

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

One of the first truly great players at Spurs, Vivian Woodward guided us to promotion to the First Division in 1909 and then scored our first goal in the top flight.

He remained an amateur throughout his career and having initially accepted an invitation to play for Spurs finally started playing regularly in season 1902-03.
By the end of that first season he had won his first full cap for England and he went on to score 28 goals in 28 appearances and play 67 amateur internationals including captaining the United Kingdom to Olympic glory in 1908 and 1912.

A tall, elegant forward in a time when brute strength was the norm up front, Woodward, also a director at Spurs, surprised everyone by announcing his retirement in order to play for Chelmsford in 1909 - only to appear again as a Chelsea player in November of the same year!

Best known as a gentleman, this was best underlined in his time at Chelsea when, in 1915, he was granted leave from the army to play in the FA Cup Final only to refuse because it would have meant a regular member of the side missing out.
Appearances/goals: 27/18 (Lg), 4 (FAC). Total appearances: 197.
