Spurs v Watford - magic moment

05 February 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Paul Robinson stepped up to take a free-kick from deep in our half in the 63rd minute of our Premier League match against Watford on March 17, 2007. What happened next?

Of course, everyone knows.

Robbo drilled forward, Watford defender Danny Shittu elected not to head away and the ball took a bounce over fellow goalkeeper Ben Foster, stranded in no-man's land, and home.

It's one of those 'were you there?' moments that none of the 36,000 present will forget in a hurry.

Robbo had history, as well. Turn the clock back four years and he scored for Leeds in a League Cup tie against Swindon!

At the time, he admitted he was ready to hold his hand up for over hitting the free-kick!

"It was just one of those things - a freak goal," he said. "Out of respect for Ben I didn't want to run off celebrating looking like I meant it. I couldn't have asked for it to happen at a better place. It was a crucial time in the game at 1-0 so I was happy it did."

Paul Robinson became the first Spurs goalkeeper to score from open play in a league fixture when he hit the target against Watford.

The only previous instance of one of our goalkeepers netting a goal in a Premier/Football League fixture since 1908 was on April 10, 1914 when 'Tiny' Joyce successfully converted a penalty kick in the 3-0 First Division home win over Bolton Wanderers.

That was Joyce's ninth spot kick in our colours, the previous eight coming in reserve team games between December, 1910 and January, 1914. He notched his tenth and final goal for us in a tour match against Bayern Munich on May 9, 1914.

Pat Jennings scored in the FA Charity Shield match against Manchester United at Old Trafford on August 12, 1967. The match ended 3-3.
