Raising awareness of lung cancer in January

Our on-going support of the NHS ‘Get to know cancer’ campaign continues into the New Year, with volunteers present at Saturday's match against Palace and an information stall situated on Spurs Square.

We have been actively raising awareness of symptoms of various forms of cancer and promoting early diagnosis throughout the first half of the Premier League season.

This month’s focus is around preventing lung cancer and encouraging people to quit smoking in 2014, part of the NHS ‘Smokefree’ campaign.

Roger’s story

Roger Bender went to his doctor suffering from unexplained weight loss and exhaustion and has now fought lung cancer three times after his first diagnosis.

Roger was once a heavy, long-term smoker, but had not smoked for 10 years when his lung cancer was first diagnosed.

He said: “I count myself extremely fortunate to have received such excellent world-class care. Each year almost 40,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer in the UK, making it the second most common cancer after breast cancer.

“But awareness of the signs and symptoms is low and more than two thirds of patients are diagnosed at a stage when they are unable to be cured.

“If you notice any changes to your body get checked out. The earlier cancer is diagnosed, the better the chance of successful treatments. Cancer is treatable, even beatable.”
