Pleat makes a point
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
David Pleat reasons that a failure to take at least a draw from tight games has cost the team dear over the course of the campaign.
Just six one-point returns have been registered this season - only Manchester United have recorded less in the Premiership - and we have lost by a single goal on 11 occasions.
"We haven't had many draws, people will say we play to win and in doing that we've lost," commented the acting boss. "I can't offer that as an excuse because it isn't one, but the strange thing is we haven't drawn many games."
David does feel that progress has been made in certain areas this season and that a platform has being put in place for the future.
"We've done certain things this season, we've given young players opportunities and players have emerged. Three players have won England caps, which is a fantastic achievement.
"We now come to the end of the season, one we started with something like 53 professionals, which is top heavy. We've now done some management and got it down to around 37.
"It is clean going forward, we are in a decent position. We now must take advantage of it with a good leader, a quality manager to take the group on.
"We need a certain amount of more leadership on the field, strength of character as we are a quiet team and we do get bullied a bit away from home.
"All the staff have worked very hard - all of them. Clive Allen has come in on a part-time basis, Chris Hughton has been a rock and I've given every thing I can to it.
"The last few weeks have been a massive strain. If we could have got two or three wins or draws instead of losses in close games we would have taken much more satisfaction from the end of the season.
"We all know we have to get things in order quickly now and we are all determined to beat Blackburn on Saturday."
Meanwhile, David has praised the contribution of young defender Stephen Kelly while covering for the suspended Stephen Carr and says that Simon Davies finally getting games under his belt after injury is a big plus.
"Stephen Kelly has done a magnificent job in the last three games, it has been an excellent experience for him and he will be all the better for it.
"Simon is getting better and fitter and we are pleased about that."
Meanwhile, young defender Joe Watson has been released. We wish him well for the future.
