Hall of Fame: John White

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

The mercurial talents of John White earned him the nickname 'The Ghost' and he will be remembered as one of the great inside forwards of all time.

He started his career with Alloa before joining Falkirk for £3,300 and, within a year, he had earned his first international cap for Scotland against West Germany.

White had four caps by the time he arrived at Spurs for a £20,000 fee in October 1959 and eventually replaced Tommy 'The Charmer' Harmer.

Similar to Harmer in many ways, White had more to offer. Blessed with immaculate ball control, trickery and balance, he was faster and more direct and his constant movement made him very difficult to mark - hence his nickname.

Ever-present in the double season, White went on to claim another FA Cup in 1962 and the UEFA Cup Winners Cup in 1963 and continued to represent Scotland with 18 caps.

He was set for more responsibility in 1964 following Danny Blanchflower's retirement but then tragedy struck - out golfing at Crews Hill, Enfield, he was fatally struck by lightning as he sheltered from a thunderstorm.
