Dave's back to school

English Barclays Premiership

Dave McEwen is going back to school again. You would have thought our young striker would have had enough of studying after finally completing exams for his business studies degree in June while the rest of his team-mates were on the beach.

But this is a very different school - the school of football. McEwen, who only joined the professional ranks in January, is now looking forward to plying his trade full-time alongside the likes of Sergei Rebrov, Steffen Iversen and Les Ferdinand.

"The club have brought in some great players in Neil Sullivan, Sergei Rebrov and Ben Thatcher and from my point of view, I have to try and learn from them and the players already here," he said. "Just training with the likes of Rebrov has to be good for any player. You have to be better for it."

McEwen was snapped up for a nominal fee from non-league outfit Dulwich Hamlet in January and made quite an impression here, so much so that he was handed his Premiership debut as a substitute against Derby in April.

Thoroughly realistic about his targets for next season, he is nevertheless aiming high. "I know what I'm capable of and if I play to my potential, I can do no more than that," he said. "Of course, it is my ambition to make the first team and I believe you have to aim that high. You have to aim for the top.

"I will try to play to the best of my ability and see where that takes me. If I'm not good enough, so be it."
