|Chris Hughton played with so many greats, you could almost overlook what a great he was himself.
Just run through his list of team-mates. Hoddle, Ardiles, Villa, Crooks, Archibald, Waddle, Allen, Clemence, Gough, Gascoigne - legends all. Yet Hughton rightly takes his place alongside them as one of the finest full-backs the club has ever seen.
The Irish international played a key role in two of our most successful periods. He walked out at Wembley just two years after his debut for the 1981 FA Cup Final and replay, followed by a return trip the following year.
He also played in the 1984 UEFA Cup triumph and three seasons later, played a lesser role, with Danny Thomas and Mitchell Thomas also pushing for full-back slots, in the 'nearly' team that finished third in Division One, runners-up in the FA Cup and losing semi-finalists in the League Cup.
Hughton said: "The successes in 1981, 1982 and 1984 all overlapped each other then we got some fresh blood in, a new manager and new ideas in 1986-87.
"It was a great period and the thing that sticks out from 1980 to 1987 is the quality of the players here. We had Stevie Perryman, Ossie, Ricky Villa, Glenn, Ray Clemence and then Chrissie Waddle and Clive Allen. All great players, exciting players and very entertaining sides."
Hughton joined West Ham in 1990 and helped the Hammers to promotion in 1990-91. He finished his professional career at Brentford before returning to White Hart Lane as reserve team boss.
After taking the reigns as manager for one game and an assistant's role to both Christian Gross and George Graham, Hughton, now 42, returned to his reserve post. With over 20 years of service, he will go down as one of the club's most loyal servants.
"I'm very appreciative of what I had in my playing career,' he added. "I played with some great players in some fantastic teams. I've been very fortunate."
