Ange's post-match report on Maddison's return

Sat 27 January 2024, 13:30|Tottenham Hotspur

Ange Postecoglou feels James Maddison 'should be right to go from now' after the playmaker's return from injury in Friday night's FA Cup tie against Manchester City.

After approaching three months on the sidelines,'Madders' stepped off the bench on 73 minutes for his first action since suffering an ankle issue against Chelsea on 6 November.

City went on to win the fourth round tie thanks to Nathan Ake's scrambled effort on 88 minutes.

I just felt that coming off the bench was going to be better for us as a team more than anything else

Ange on James Maddison's return

Asked in his post-match press conference if it was a close decision to start James, Ange responded: "Not really. I think knowing the nature of the game tonight, he's trained well this week and a half, but he's missed a lot of football.

"We were hoping to get him some minutes tonight which he did and he should be right to go from now on, but there's another two games next week and we need him and others to pitch in.

"So, yes, it wasn't really much of a dilemma about whether to start him or not. I just felt that coming off the bench was going to be better for us as a team more than anything else."
