Ange on the importance of goals being shared around the team: “It’s essential”

Tue 09 April 2024, 12:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Ange Postecoglou referenced how important it is for the team to have ‘multiple avenues’ in front of goal after defenders Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro found the target in our 3-1 win against Forest on Sunday.

The pair delivered spectacular strikes when we needed them after Forest had fought back from our early goal created by Timo Werner, slid into his own net by Murillo, to level by half-time.

Ange made changes at half-time - Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on for Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr - and we took control, with first Micky and then Pedro smashing home for 2-1 and 3-1 by the hour mark. That's how it stayed at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Illustrated in this feature - we have 15 different goalscorers this season, with six defenders on target - Micky, Pedro, Destiny Udogie, Cristian Romero, Emerson Royal and Ben Davies - more than any other team in the Premier League.

Speaking on our Review Show, Ange told us: "As you saw against Forest, we’re working hard with guys like Pedro and Destiny when they get into that final third, so they have the quality to hurt the opposition. Pedro took his goal really well and our ability to hopefully have multiple avenues of scoring goals, so we’re not relying on one or two, is going to be important, I thought that was good today.

"That’s essential, because we were never really going to replace Harry (Kane) with someone else who was going to score that volume of goals, those kinds of players just don’t exist, so, for us, it was about the collective and how we can bridge that gap.

"Sonny’s done a great job in leading the line, even today, didn’t get a goal, was unlucky, worked hard for the team, and the wingers contributed. For us, it’s a little bit of everything from everyone, we think there are more goals from this team, particularly from midfield areas, so it was great to see a couple of defenders get them today."
