England and Iwabuchi score in 5-0 FA Cup win - on-the-whistle-report

Spurs Women 5-0 London City Lionesses

Sun 29 January 2023, 14:00|Tottenham Hotspur

We progressed to the fifth round of the Vitality Women's FA Cup with a convincing 5-0 win at home to London City Lionesses on Sunday afternoon.

January signings Bethany England and Mana Iwabuchi gave us a 2-0 lead going into the break, before Drew Spence added a third shortly after half-time, Eveliina Summanen forced a Harley Bennett own goal, and then got one for herself late on.

Rehanne Skinner made two changes to the side that began Wednesday's game against Chelsea, Amy Turner and Summanen making way for Angharad James and Ashleigh Neville, the latter returning from her suspension.

We came close to the opening goal early on, England taking a ball over the top down well before cutting inside onto her right foot and shooting just wide of the near post.

After Sarah Ewans had a shot saved well by Tinja-Riikka Korpela at the other end, England did give us the lead. Rosella Ayane crossed in from the left and the goal was left wide open for our number 19 to nod into the roof of the net for 1-0.

In the 26th minute, Spence tried her luck from distance in a position similar to the one she scored from against Chelsea on Wednesday, but this time the long-ranger went wide.

We doubled our lead on the brink of half-time, Iwabuchi finding the back of the net from the edge of the 18-yard box with a slight deflection.

At half-time, Summanen came on for Ayane, and made an instant impact, crossing the ball in for England, whose shot re-bounded kindly to Spence who poked the ball across the line for 3-0.

Lily Agg had a good chance to pull one back but Shelina Zadorsky did well to get a block in.

Iwabuchi and England combined moments later, Mana putting a lovely cross in for Bethany to connect with, but the header went straight at Shae Yanez.

We then made two further changes, Turner and Nikola Karczewska replacing Zadorsky and England respectively.

Summanen created more chaos for London City, her 66th minute cross from the left wing hooked over Yanez by Lionesses captain Bennett for 4-0.

We made two more changes in the 69th minute, Neville and Iwabuchi making way for Asmita Ale and Chioma Ubogagu respectively.

Karczewska had a good effort from long-range as she looked to make it five, but the ball flew just wide of the post with Yanez stretching.

Karczewska put the ball on a plate for Summanen to get the fifth with ten minutes to go as we remained fully in control throughout the second half.
