Heung-Min Son was placed 11th and Harry Kane 21st as the results of the 2022 Ballon d'Or were announced at the Theatre du Chatelet, Paris, on Monday evening.

Real Madrid's France international striker Karim Benzema took the prestigious award from Bayern Munich's Sadio Mane in second and City's Kevin de Bruyne in third.

Meanwhile, Hugo Lloris was placed 10th in le Trophée Yachine, named after all-time great, Lev Yashin of the USSR, introduced in 2019 and recognising the best goalkeeper in the world, this time won by Real Madrid's Belgium international Thibaut Courtois.

For the first time, the Ballon d'Or was judged over a season - in this case, August 2021 to July, 2022 - rather than a calendar year. Premier League Golden Boot winner last season, this was Sonny's second nomination (previously 2019) and Harry's fourth (2017, 2018 and 2021) and both players made it into the final 30.

Presented annually since 1956 by France's weekly football magazine France Football, the Ballon d'Or - previously known as the European Footballer of the Year and the FIFA Ballon d'Or - was based on voting by football journalists until 2006. After 2007, coaches and captains of national teams were also given the right to vote.

Originally, it was an award for players from Europe before being expanded in 1995 to include all players from any origin that have been active at European clubs. The award became a global prize in 2007.
