Internationals – Under-19 Euros begin for Dane and Alfie
Sun 19 June 2022, 12:00|Tottenham Hotspur
The European Under-19 Championship finals are underway in Slovakia, with two of our young players preparing for their first game.
Striker Dane Scarlett and midfielder Alfie Devine are both in the 21-strong England squad for the tournament, with the Young Lions set to play their first fixture in Group B against Austria this evening (Sunday 19 June).
They’ll then face Serbia on Wednesday and Israel next Saturday, with all three games starting at 7pm and shown live in the UK on BBC iPlayer.
The top two teams from both groups will advance to the semi-finals, which will additionally qualify them for the 2023 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Indonesia. A fifth World Cup qualifying spot will go to the winners of a play-off between the two third-placed teams in the group stage.
Dane, 18, made seven first team appearances for us last season and scored six goals in five Euro qualifiers for England Under-19s to help them reach this summer’s tournament finals, including both goals in a decisive 2-0 win over Portugal in March.
Alfie, 17, netted nine times in 17 league appearances for our Development Squad in 2021/22, in addition to one goal in three games in the Young Lions’ aforementioned Euro qualifying phase.
A full list of England Under-19s’ fixtures at the Euros can be found below (all kick-off times are UK).
A number of our women’s first team players are also on international duty over the coming weeks, with Rosella Ayane kicking-off the action by helping Morocco to a 1-1 draw with Zambia in Rabat on Saturday evening.
