'I love the way he plays' - Eric Dier on Romero and our new arrivals

Fri 08 October 2021, 15:15|Tottenham Hotspur

Two months, three games together, and Eric Dier is convinced we’ve signed a special player in Cristian Romero.

The Argentine centre-back joined us on 6 August after quite a summer - being named Serie A’s Defender of the Season, no mean accolade, and then helping the La Albiceleste to their first Copa America triumph since 1994.

Now well into the settling in process, Cristian certainly looked the part in our important win against Villa last weekend, only his second 90 minutes in the Premier League.

Eric has started alongside him three times now, and, during a lengthy catch-up at Hotspur Way this week, stated: “Cristian looks good, I think he’s going to be a fantastic player for the club.

“I love the way he plays. It’s enjoyable to watch and he’s enjoyable to play with. He’s very aggressive, very much on the front foot and very clever as well, the way he uses his body, the way he reads the game. He’s sharp, and so quick to execute. He’s very sneaky in taking the ball away and using different angles.”

Eric took the opportunity to tell us how all our new signings - Cristian joined at the Club this summer by Pierluigi Gollini, Bryan Gil and Emerson Royal, while Pape Matar Sarr has rejoined Metz on loan - had settled in so far.

“Cristian has settled in really well,” he continued. “He has Gio (Lo Celso) here as well, which helps. It’s an easy group to settle into, he’s settled in well, a really good guy.

“The same goes for Emerson, he’s settled in so well, a great character, a lot of fun, works very hard. I’ve been really impressed with him, his work rate, always in the gym, always looking after himself.

“Bryan as well, I’ve been impressed with him, in a new country, and he plays with a lot of courage, a lot of confidence, always wants the ball, never hiding. That’s great to see. He has a lot of quality as well.

“Pier’s been amazing. It was probably easier for him to settle because he speaks really good English and has been in England before. He brings great energy to the dressing room, great energy to training, always giving 100 per cent, which isn’t always easy for goalkeepers if they’re not playing all the time, but his commitment in training and commitment to get better is fantastic. He’s another big character and he brings a lot to the dressing room, during the week, matchdays, and he’s settled in so quickly. Nothing but positives.”

Look out for more from Eric next week...
