Jose Mourinho cut a frustrated figure after our 1-1 draw against Fulham on Tuesday evening.

Harry Kane’s flying header from Sergio Reguilon’s cross was the least we deserved after an impressive first half. However, further chances came and went and then, as Fulham came more into the game in the second half, Heung-Min Son struck the inside of the post with 20 minutes remaining.

That would have made it 2-0, but it was 1-1 minutes later as Ivan Cavaleiro headed home Ademola Lookman’s cross. Reguilon had the ball in the net in the 89th minute but hopes of a late winner were denied by an offside flag.

We had the chances, like we normally have... then a mistake and we were punished by that mistake

Jose said: “We had the chances, like we normally have, chances to kill the game in the first half, a big chance to kill the game in the second half, and then a mistake and we were punished by that mistake, a goal that is completely avoidable.

“I have to admit in the second half they played more, they were losing, and they tried, but even so, Hugo didn’t make a save and we couldn’t kill the game.”

It was put to Jose that we’d have to dust ourselves down quickly as we travel to a Sheffield United side on Sunday (2pm) no doubt buoyed by their first win of the season having toppled Newcastle on Tuesday night.

He added: “Yes, but don’t (just) look to Sheffield’s results, because they are a very good team. I don’t look to them as a team that is bottom of the league and has just won their first match. I look at them as the good team they are.”
