Sonny: “I couldn’t believe it because I scored a header!”

Tue 27 October 2020, 09:08|Tottenham Hotspur

After heartbreak against Newcastle and West Ham, Heung-Min Son welcomed grinding out a 1-0 win at Burnley with open arms.

Both Sonny and Jose Mourinho described that 3-3 draw against West Ham last time out as feeling like a loss, so the joy at coming out of a cold, rainy night at Turf Moor with all three points was palpable.

“Remember the West Ham game? We played amazingly and drew, and it felt like we lost the game,” said Sonny, after goal number eight in the Premier League. “Tonight, we did a really good job, fought to the end and it’s a really good example.

We showed really good character. It’s a difficult place, always tough. Monday night, freezing, raining, and it was an incredible win.

“We showed really good character. It’s a difficult place, always tough. Monday night, freezing, raining, and it was an incredible win. I think this will give a little boost to our mentality, to be stronger.”

Once again, Sonny hooked up with Harry Kane for the winner on 76 minutes. Five minutes earlier, Harry headed Burnley’s best chance off his own line from James Tarkowski’s header. This time, in Burnley’s box, Harry did well to flick Erik Lamela’s corner into the danger zone where Sonny stooped to power a header into the top corner.

The pair have now combined 29 times in the Premier League – second only behind Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard’s 36.

“It’s very rare, very rare, to see me score a header, and another Harry assist!” added Sonny. “It’s incredible. I did my job, try to work hard always, try to help the team and luckily the ball went in there, and I didn’t have to do too much.

All-time Premier League goal combinations

36 - Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard (Chelsea)

29 - Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son (Tottenham)

29 - David Silva and Sergio Aguero (Manchester City)

29 - Robert Pires and Thierry Henry (Arsenal)

27 - Darren Anderton and Teddy Sheringham (Tottenham)

“I just had to get my head to the ball and when the ball hit the net, I couldn’t even believe it because I scored a header! I was really happy. I’m just so happy to get the three points here in such a difficult place.

“Like I said before, I thought we played amazingly against Newcastle, West Ham and drew the games. It felt like we lost the games. Tonight, I think it’s important to take this positive energy and a great result. The season is long, and we need these points, it doesn’t matter how, we have to have that winning mentality. This game is already past. We move on to the next games.”

That next game will come quickly as we travel to Belgium to take on Royal Antwerp in Matchday Two of the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening (5.55pm UK).
