Media view on Matt Doherty - John Percy, Telegraph

Mon 31 August 2020, 10:30|Tottenham Hotspur

Midlands football reporter for the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph, John Percy is a regular at Molineux, where he’s watched our new signing Matt Doherty play a key role in Wolves’ rise from League One to the Premier League and the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

The full-back has featured in 98 of Wolves’ last 105 games in all competitions, and contributed 15 goals and 15 assists in the last two seasons.

Here's what John had to say about the Republic of Ireland international...

The modern day full-back

John: “The journalists who I work with are always talking about the most underrated players in the Premier League, and Matt Doherty always appears in my list. I’ve always thought of him as the modern day full-back, he can attack, he can defend, and he’s obviously improved massively under Nuno Espirito Santo at Wolves. He’s been very much part of their style of play, 3-5-2, again, the modern day full-back, and has a remarkable record for goals and assists (15 goals, 15 assists in the last two seasons). He’s one of those players who seems to have got better year after year and for Wolves fans, he epitomises their rise from League One to the latter stages of the Europa League last season. He doesn’t miss many games, either. He has a brilliant record and Connor Coady is the same at Wolves, in fact, his record even more ridiculous! Doherty is very, very reliable. He’s always 7/10 and I love the way he plays the game, so modern and in tune with new styles of play."

A down-to-earth character

John: “He’s very genuine, down-to-earth. He came from the Irish League, so he’s not done it in the traditional way and you tend to find when players work their way up like that, they tend not to forget where they came from. Spurs have a really good signing.”
