Women victorious after late turnaround at West Ham

West Ham Women 1-2 Spurs Women

Sun 01 September 2019, 17:58|Tottenham Hotspur

Two goals in the last nine minutes saw Spurs Women come back from a goal down to win 2-1 at West Ham United in our final pre-season friendly before the start of the season on Sunday.

Trailing to Martha Thomas' effort mid-way through the first half, we competed well against our London rivals at Rush Green and eventually found a breakthrough in the 81st minute via Lucy Quinn. Lucia Leon completed the turnaround two minutes from time.

Taking on a Hammers side who'll also be domestic opponents for us in the Barclays FA Women's Super League this term, we had to be on the defensive early on to deny Wiktoria Kiszkis from close range, while Tessel Middag hit the post for the Hammers after 16 minutes. The hosts took the lead seven minutes later when Middag sent Thomas away to fire past Chloe Morgan, but we almost levelled on the half-hour mark when Quinn's looping cross hit the top of the crossbar.

Five minutes after the restart it was West Ham's turn to hit the woodwork when right winger Adriana Leon's cross hit the near post while we had Morgan to thank for a superb double-save on 73 minutes, the keeper denying Leon one-on-one before somehow keeping out Jacynta Galabadaarachchi's effort on the follow-up.

That contribution proved crucial as we went on to turn things around. First, Sophie Mclean played a through ball for Angela Addison who set up Quinn to restore parity in the 81st minute before Ashleigh Neville's low, driven cross was converted by Lucia Leon seven minutes later. In between the goals, reserve team midfielder Renea Jarrett was introduced off the bench for her debut, capping a positive afternoon just seven days shy of our WSL opener at Chelsea.
