Heung-Min Son: "I'm the happiest guy in the world"

Thu 04 April 2019, 13:58|Tottenham Hotspur

The stars aligned for Heung-Min Son to make history at our new stadium on Wednesday night.

Sonny became the first player to score for the first team at our new home with the crucial opener in the 2-0 win against Crystal Palace in the Premier League. The South Korea star fired home on 55 minutes with Christian Eriksen securing the points 10 minutes from time.

It wasn’t lost on Sonny that he scored his first Premier League goal against the same opponents back at the old Lane in September, 2015.

“It feels amazing,” he said on an emotional night for everyone connected with Spurs. “I’m very proud to play in this shirt.

“I still remember when I scored my first Premier League goal at White Hart Lane, it was against Crystal Palace and now I score not such a beautiful goal but I think the most important goal for me.

“I feel proud of my team-mates, staff, fans and I just want to say thank-you for the amazing support and giving me the opportunity to play in this unbelievable stadium. It makes me happy. I’m the happiest guy in the world.”

Sonny told us recently that his first Premier League goal against Palace was his favourite. Having written his name into Club folklore, would this goal now overtake that one? He couldn’t make up his mind...

“Probably not! Of course, it’s a very special goal, but I think since I joined Tottenham this is even more special because... no, I can’t say, both goals mean such a lot, I can’t choose one, it’s very difficult!”

One thing Sonny was certain about was the team deserved the three points on Wednesday night, ending a run of five without a win in the Premier League.

Our intent was underlined by racking up 26 attempts at goal with our new 17,500-capacity South Stand seemingly willing in that opener in the second half.

Sonny added: “We showed great character and mentality to go forward, dominate the game and create so many chances. There was just the moment to find the goal at the right time, we did that early in the second half and then created more chances. We deserved the three points.”
