Leeds 1-0 Spurs | Roberto De Zerbi’s verdict

Roberto De Zerbi spoke about mentality after our 1-0 defeat at Leeds in the Premier League on Saturday.

The first half was even – three attempts at goal each – but Leeds pushed us back in the second half and Noah Okafor’s winner on 74 minutes was their 16th effort.

We still carved out a late chance to equalise as Jan Paul van Hecke connected with Andy Robertson’s free-kick in the 90th minute, only for James Trafford to fling himself to his left to tip around the post.

After three-successive wins and four matches unbeaten, Roberto was naturally disappointed with how it played out when he spoke to us afterwards. “First half, we played well, better than Leeds,” he said. “We created two, three chances to score.

“In the second half, we didn't show what we showed in the Chelsea game and the other games. I don't want to repeat, but now the mental aspect is the most important part in football. We have to demand for ourselves to play every game with the same spirit, with the same behaviour, with the same connection. Otherwise, in this type of game, it's normal to suffer, it's normal to lose the game.

"If we want to analyse the first part of the season, we played badly against Brentford and today. In the other games, we played well, not too many wins, but we played well even when we lost games.

"Today, in the second half, you can't imagine to win a game, because we lost every duel. We arrived third on the pitch, third on the ball. There was space, there was time enough to play.

“I didn't see the same personality, I didn't see the same courage, the same character, the same attitude. It's a journey, we have to improve for sure, but football is like an exam every day and we need to show if we deserve to stay in this club - for me, for the club, for every one of us.”
