Koga your Player of the Match after winning goal at Brighton

Toko Koga surged to the top of your Player of the Match poll after she bagged a dramatic, stoppage time winner in our 2-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Saturday.

The young defender, who was making her 19th appearance in the competition this term, has been a standout performer in her first season in England and was rewarded for her fine performances this season by netting the winning goal in our WSL season finale.

An arrival from Feyenoord in the summer of 2025, the Japan international has been a composed figure in our backline throughout the campaign but, in the second minute of stoppage time, she showcased that in the forward areas.

Receiving the ball from Sophie Baggaley’s clearance, around 35 yards out, Toko took one touch and despite losing her footing slightly as she struck the ball, she lifted it over the hosts’ shot stopper and backline and into empty net.

That sparked jubilant scenes in our dugout as the 20-year-old ran over to embrace a hug with Head Coach Martin Ho followed by the rest of the coaching staff and her team-mates, with that goal ensuring we ended a record-breaking season with an important win on the road.

It also saw us maintained our unbeaten record on the final day of the WSL season, remaining the only team in the competition to have never lost a season finale in six attempts.

Winning the award for the second time this campaign, having won the prize on the opening day of the season, Toko took 56 per cent of the vote, with Signe Gaupset (17 per cent) and Olivia Holdt (10 per cent) her closest contenders.
