“My first goal for this great club, I'm so happy and so proud” | Every word of Conor Gallagher’s post-match interview at Villa
Conor Gallagher explained he wasn’t thinking about the moment he scored his first goal for the club to lay the foundations for a crucial win at Villa – he was just focused ‘going again’.
The midfielder certainly went again, and again, and again, brilliantly leading our press as we dominated at Villa Park.
Conor struck from 25 yards on 12 minutes, Richarlison headed home Mathys Tel’s cross on 25 and it wasn’t until the 62nd minute that the home side had their first effort at goal. The points were all-but in the bag when Emiliano Buendia pulled a goal back for Villa in the sixth minute of added time - the full-time whistle sounded seconds later to signal jubilant scenes in the away end.
Conor spoke to presenter Ben Haines afterwards at Villa Park – here’s what he had to say…
Ben: It felt like a massive win today. Just tell us what the atmosphere is like in the changing room now…
Conor: “Yeah, it's brilliant. I think the most important thing was the three points tonight, but I think we're most happy with the performance. I think it shows all the hard work we've been putting in with the new gaffer and all the tactical stuff in training, all the meetings, everything worked tonight and it worked in the most important time, so hopefully we can build on this and continue this performance.”
How big was tonight for you personally? Was that your best performance yet in a Spurs shirt?
Conor: “Yeah, I think so, for sure. Obviously, it's been a difficult few months for me, for the whole club. This is what I do best - off the ball, I work my hardest for the team, I'm a team player. I try and do what I do best, and I think today the fans were able to see that. I want to keep doing that as best as I can to make the fans proud, to make the club proud and hopefully help Tottenham keep playing like that and getting more wins.”
How special a moment for you is that with the goal? You saw immediately after your team-mates jump all over you and enjoy it with you, but it felt like a really big moment for you in a Spurs shirt?
Conor: “Yeah, massive. If I'm being honest, I wasn't thinking about me for a second when I scored. Normally, if you score your first goal for the club, you're really relieved for yourself. You're like, ‘okay, first goal, I can relax’, but I had none of that feeling because I was so focused on going again and continuing to play well that game. I knew how important the three points were, how important the performance was. I'm really proud of the team to continue for 90 minutes in that way. Obviously, after the game, sitting down and relaxing, just knowing that it was my first goal for this great club, I'm so happy and I'm so proud. I'm thankful for all the fans tonight showing their support to me as well.”
Can I ask you about your midfield partners today, Rodrigo and Joao? It felt like the three of you worked incredibly hard together, slightly different roles, but that desire, work ethic and passion were just unbelievable...
Conor: “Yeah, they were brilliant. They were so good on and off the ball, and not just them, I thought the whole team was fantastic from the defence to attack. I thought we defended so well and we were aggressive when we pressed and everyone was so good. I was just so proud of everyone. It was so good to see and be a part of. I think everyone has that really good feeling and I'm just hoping we can keep this going and keep building on this because I thought tonight was brilliant.”
I just want to ask you finally about the fans. They were singing at the end 'Tottenham away, ole ole' - I imagine for you guys, when you've got that level of support, it does give you that extra little bit that you need on a night like tonight...
Conor: “It does. I said it before, the fans make such a difference, such a big difference in games like that, tough away games against a club who's had a great season. They fed off how we were on the pitch. They could see how hungry and hard we were working and it's great to see for them. I'm just so happy that we can give them that feeling tonight of a great performance and a win and they were part of it as well.”
