ROBBIE'S 100 - THE FACTS

Robbie Keane became only the 15th player in our history to reach the 100-goal milestone when he scored against Sunderland on Saturday.

More notably, the striker is only the second player in the last 20 years to reach three-figures since Glenn Hoddle ended his playing career at the Lane in 1987 - Teddy Sheringham the other player to make it.

By scoring against Sunderland on January 19 Robbie Keane became the 15th player to have reached 100 senior goals in the league and major cup competitions in our colours since 1908.

Billy Minter was the first Spur to do so, he reached his 100 when scoring the first of his two goals in a 4-0 home win against Fulham on December 13, 1919.

A couple of seasons later Bert Bliss joined him, netting his 100th versus Manchester City on February 11, 1922. Next up was Jimmy Dimmock, his second against Clapton Orient on March 16, 1929 being the landmark goal.

Five years on and the “Chesterfield Tough” George Hunt’s rapid goal fire brought his 100th in only his 132nd senior appearance for us, at the age of 24, his first against Manchester City on April 14, 1934.

Johnny Morrison, a latecomer to the professional game, reached three figures with his second goal against Swansea Town on March 25, 1939. He and Billy Minter both notched their 100th goal destined to play just three more competitive games each in our colours.

February, 1953 saw two players reach the landmark. Les Bennett’s second goal in the FA Cup tie with Halifax Town on the 14th was followed a week later by his strike partner Len Duquemin with his first goal against Preston North End. Bobby Smith joined the clan with his second goal versus Burnley on April 8, 1959.

Season 1963-64 saw Cliff Jones and Jimmy Greaves both reach 100 with goals against Blackpool. Cliff scored in the 6-1 home win on September 14 and Jimmy in the 2-0 win at Bloomfield Road on January 18.

Not surpisingly, Greaves holds the record as our youngest 100 goals scorer, aged 23, and also completed the tally in fewest matches, taking only 109 to reach the ton.

The other half of the ‘G’ strikeforce, Alan Gilzean was next to achieve the feat, in the match with Leeds United, played at Hull on August 25, 1971.

Martin Chivers – the last Spur to net 100 League goals - joined the group the following year, scoring in the League Cup tie with Huddersfield Town on September 6, 1972.

Glenn Hoddle played more games than any of the others to complete his 100 goals – 424 - but he always did go for quality rather than quantity! His 100th came in an FA Cup replay with Notts County on January 29, 1986.

Teddy Sheringham is the oldest of our 100 goal men, reaching the tally with his second goal against Chelsea on September 16, 2001. He was aged 35 years and five months, some four months older than Les Bennett.

Finally, spare a thought for Eugene “Taffy” O’Callaghan. His 263 senior games for us between 1927 and 1935 yielded a tally of 99 goals. He did return to play in our wartime team but only goals in the Football/Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and the major European competitions count in this survey!
