International round-up

05 March 2014|Tottenham Hotspur

Nabil Bentaleb made a dream debut for Algeria on Wednesday night.

The young midfielder helped Algeria to a 2-0 victory over Slovenia, completed a full 90-minute shift and met the legendary Pele, who was in Algeria to attend the Copa Cola Cola.

Nabil - eligible for Algeria through his parents - almost capped it all with a debut goal, but fired just over from the edge of the box in the second half. Goals from Saudani and Taider secured the friendly win for the home side in Algiers.

Paulinho provided an assist for Neymar as Brazil ran out comfortable 5-0 winners against South Africa. Paulinho played the first half in Johannesburg, Neymar went on to complete a hat-trick with further goals from Oscar and Fernandinho.

Unfortunately, Bongani Khumalo, currently on loan at Doncaster, had to leave the action early due to injury.

Hugo Lloris captained France to an impressive 2-0 home win against Holland and Gylfi Sigurdsson returned to action after his recent injury with a 90-minute stint as Iceland were beaten 3-1 by Wales in Cardiff.

Jan Vertonghen played 83 minutes as Belgium let slip a 2-0 lead against Ivory Coast, who grabbed a late equaliser.

Andros Townsend earned his fifth cap for England as a late substitute in the 1-0 friendly win against Denmark at Wembley.

Staying with England, Tom Carroll completed a full shift as England Under-21s beat Wales 1-0 in UEFA U21 Championship qualifying at Derby. Norwich's Nathan Redmond struck the only goal.

Young Academy winger Emmanuel Sonupe was on target for England U18s, who were eventually toppled 2-1 by Croatia at St George's Park.

Jordan Archer earned his 12th cap for Scotland U21s, who also let a 2-0 lead slip for a 2-2 draw against Hungary in Dundee, while winger Kenny McEvoy was a late substitute for the Republic of Ireland, who lost 2-1 at home to Montenegro in UEFA qualifying.
