Gareth Bale has become only the second player to retain the Wales Footballer of the Year Award.

Gareth Bale has become only the second player to retain the Wales Footballer of the Year Award.

The flying winger picked up the top prize at the Football Association of Wales Awards dinner at the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff on Tuesday night.

In doing so, he follows in the footsteps of Mark Hughes, the only other Welsh player to retain the award in 1993 and 1994.

Gareth, in fine form for club and country so far this season, told the FAW's official website: "Obviously I am very pleased to win the award again, it's very special to me to be chosen twice like this. It is a great award to win, a real honour.

“There are some really great names on the list who have won this award before me, it is an honour to be bracketed with them.

“Things have started to go well for me, for my club as well as for Wales. My am is to keep that level of performance going in every game.

“I am getting a bit older now and there is more confidence in my game than before. I aim to take my form up to the next level."
