Avilla the star as Ladies show mettle again

29 September 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Avilla Bergin scored a hat-trick as Spurs Ladies toppled C&K Basildon 4-1 in the FA Women's Premier League on Sunday.

Once again, the team was tested to the full.

Without a number of regular starters, including skipper Jenna Schillaci, Sophie McLean and the attacking threat of Wendy Martin and Bianca Baptiste, Spurs came from 1-0 down to secure a fourth victory in five to move up to third in FAWPL South.

Trailing early to Amy Nash's goal, Bergin hit the first of her treble to level on 35 minutes and pave the way for a dominant second half display.

The second goal arrived 10 minutes into the second half as Lucia Leon drove forward before finding Mollie Kmita, who dispatched the one-on-one.

Jenny Moore came off the bench midway through the half and played a key role as Bergin completed her hat-trick with two goals in the space of five minutes, twice sending the Irish international clear to finish.

"We got to half-time and it was similar to last week's win against Forest Green (0-0 at half-time, 5-0 win) in that we were on top and as long as we stayed composed in our play, we knew the goals would come," reported manager Karen Hills.

"Maya Vio came on for the second half and played her part, controlled the midfield area and just calmed us down in possession with simple passes.

"The movement from the forward players was fantastic and once we got ahead, the girls looked confident and we were worthy winners.

"Avilla took her hat-trick superbly, Maya was excellent and Leah Rawle deserves a mention as well, she was outstanding at the back. She made a vital tackle to halt a one-on-one situation when it was 1-1 and that was a key moment for us.

"Jenny Moore did really well to get the two assists and it was good to see Ellie Butterwick involved off the bench after she came up from the reserves.

"All in all, a good day!"

Spurs return to action against Charlton at Sporting Club Thamesmead FC the FAWPL tomorrow night (Wednesday, September 30, 7.45pm).
