Think Fit offers inclusive sport, physical activity and education opportunities to women who live in deprived communities. The project adopts a flexible approach and is tailored to the needs of the community. Activity ranging from multi sports to women only jogging sessions is offered at hub sites across our four north London boroughs. Workshops such as healthy eating, sexual health and CV writing will also be on offer along with the opportunity for women to gain a coaching qualification leading to volunteering, coaching and employment prospects. Participants will have access to mentoring hours from trained staff.

For many women with children or those managing a tight budget and time to themselves - sport can slip down the list of priorities. The projects where funders have asked local women what is stopping them from getting involved and what sports interest them, before coming up with an offer that is appealing and accessible.

    Why needed:

    •    Only 16.4% of women in North London participate in 3 x 30 minutes of sport and activity a week.
    •    Think Fit targets women in and around lower super output areas that are in the top 20% most deprived in the country.
    •    40% of women in these areas are from a non-white background, with large percentages from Black African and Indian background. Research shows that many people from these communities face health inequalities, feel socially isolated and stressed.
    •    50% of women at Broadwater Farm, the Haringey hub site for the programme, said they would like to gain skills around sport and health.
    •    36 weeks a year of delivery across four North London boroughs for three years.
    •    Four sustainable hubs by Year Three of the project.
    •    Six new activity sessions just for women across the four hub sites starting September 2011.
    •    One full time co-ordinator dedicated to the programme.
    •    The programme will aim to engage with 1000 women by the end of the three year project.
