    Content:
    A seven week programme improving 50+ men’s Internet and IT skills. This starts from basic mouse and keyboard skills to setting up email and communicating via Skype. The main focus is on developing Internet research skills to enable the men to navigate their way to trustworthy health information sites and steer away from misleading information such as miracle cures with commercial incentive or self-diagnosing and self-medicating using counterfeit drugs on offer online. iMen50+ is located at the stadium’s Learning Zone, which harnesses the glamour and motivational aspect of the Premier League Club to inspire the men to attend and develop their IT skills.

    For the man who believes he needs to be strong, silent and reluctant to admit weakness, uncertainty or limitations in his knowledge, the Internet has clear benefits

    Why needed:

    42% of men die of all causes before the age of 75 compared to 26% of women, the reason often being late diagnosis.
    Men are increasingly unlikely to consult a doctor.
    Only 30% of men aged 65+ access the Internet and amongst men belonging to lower socioeconomic groups, the figure is even lower.
    Older men are missing out on the free, discreet and reliable health information available online .
    Older men are more likely to be socially excluded than older women.

    Impact:
    89% of the participants are now using computers independently either at home or at a library.
    100% reported that they would like to have the programme extended.
    Most of the men on the programme started the programme on their own and have now befriended each other and keep in touch by email.
    83% expressed their interest in attending the next course as a mentor to the new comers.
    To offer one to one support to the participants, the programme was supported by our young volunteers, interns and work placement students, who found the experience rewarding.
