10 for 10: Our games of the decade - 2018

Tue 31 December 2019, 10:43|Tottenham Hotspur

What a decade! Book-ended by incredible performances and hat-tricks in the Champions League, it’s been an amazing 10 years for the Club we all love – all culminating in the historic move to our world-class new stadium and the Champions League Final in 2019.

What games have defined the decade? There are too many to mention, from that triumphant night at the Etihad in May, 2010, to walking out at the Wanda Metropolitana in Madrid in June, 2019, via that night at the Amsterdam Arena and the opening of Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It’s a decade that has seen it all at Spurs and in this special festive feature over 10 parts, we’ve selected our matches of the past 10 years. It’s not a definitive list – as we all know, the game is about opinions – but here’s our take on the 2010s. Here’s to the 2020s!

10 for 10 - 2018

Chelsea 1-3 Spurs (Eriksen 45, Dele 62, 66)
Premeir League
Stamford Bridge, 1 April, 2018

We'd beaten Arsenal at the Emirates, United at Old Trafford, Liverpool at Anfield, City at the Etihad. Now it was time for the final hurdle, Stamford Bridge.

As we were reminded every time we stepped off the tube at Fulham Broadway, we hadn't beaten Chelsea at the Bridge in the league since goals from Gary Lineker and David Howells did the job back in 1990.

Runners-up the previous season and fighting it out in the top four again, this game on 1 April was huge. We were in fourth, five points ahead of Antonio Conte's reigning champions after 30 games. Win, an eight-point lead with seven remaining. Lose, it was down to two points. Momentum was everything.

We controlled the game early but there was a familiar sinking feeling when Alvaro Morata headed Chelsea into the lead on the half-hour. Not this time though. We picked ourselves up and equalised spectacularly on the stroke of half-time with a bolt out of the blue from Christian Eriksen, a wicked, dipping strike home off the underside of the bar from 30 yards.

We took over in the second half. Dele scored a technically-brilliant leveller on 62 minutes, bringing down Eric Dier's pass and finishing in one movement. Dele soon doubled up from close range and we were out of sight at 3-1.

We went on to finish third in 2017/18, seven points ahead of Chelsea to secure Champions League football for the third-successive season. Manchester City ran away with the title on 100 points.

Team: Lloris, Trippier, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Davies, Dier (Wanyama 81), Dembele, Lamela (Sissoko 88), Dele, Eriksen, Son (Kane 74).
