10 for 10: Our games of the decade – 2015

Fri 27 December 2019, 15:39|Tottenham Hotspur

What a decade! Book-ended by incredible performances and hat-tricks in the Champions League, it’s been an amazing 10 years for the Club we all love – all culminating in the historic move to our world-class new stadium and the Champions League Final in 2019.

What games have defined the decade? There are too many to mention, from that triumphant night at the Etihad in May, 2010, to walking out at the Wanda Metropolitana in Madrid in June, 2019, via that night at the Amsterdam Arena and the opening of Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It’s a decade that has seen it all at Spurs and in this special festive feature over 10 parts, we’ve selected our matches of the past 10 years. It’s not a definitive list – as we all know, the game is about opinions – but here’s our take on the 2010s. Here’s to the 2020s!

10 for 10 - 2015

Spurs 5-3 Chelsea (Kane 30, 52, Rose 44, Townsend 45+4, Chadli 78)
Premier League
White Hart Lane, 1 January, 2015

If our huge win at Villa a couple of months earlier had seen Harry Kane arrive, this was the day that showed the world what both he and this ever-blossoming team was capable of.

With Jose Mourinho back at the helm, Chelsea came to the Lane with 14 wins in 19, and just one defeat. They'd conceded just 14 goals in that time and would eventually win the title by eight points.

We were also in the middle of a run that would stretch to 10 wins and a draw in 15 games between November, 2014 and February, 2015 - and it all came together, spectacularly, against Chelsea on New Year's Day, 2015.

Diego Costa put the Blues ahead but this team - including five Academy graduates - wasn't going to be brushed aside. Taking the game by the scruff of the neck, Harry shrugged off two players before drilling home the equaliser from 25 yards. Danny Rose made it 2-1 just before the break and Andros Townsend converted from the spot for 3-1 before half-time.

Harry produced a turn and clinical finish for 4-1 on 52 minutes before another three goals were traded, Eden Hazard for 4-2, Nacer Chadli for 5-2 and finally John Terry, a late consolation for 5-3.

We would end up fifth that season, and the wheels were very much in motion.

Harry described the first goal as his 'best yet' and his breakthrough season, 2014/15, makes impressive reading - 30 goals in all competitions, 20 in the Premier League, first Spur to score 30 goals since Gary Lineker in 1991/92, first home-grown player to hit 20 league goals since Mark Falco in 1984/85, first Spurs hat-trick, first hat-trick in the Premier League, doubles in wins against Chelsea and Arsenal, Barclays Player of the Month in January and February, Match of the Day Goal of the Month for January, captained the team for the first time, named PFA Young Player of the Year, runner-up in PFA Player of the Year, named in PFA Premier League Team of the Year and the icing on the cake, a goal 79 seconds into his full England debut at Wembley!

Team: Lloris, Walker, Fazio, Vertonghen, Rose (Davies), Bentaleb, Mason (Dembele), Townsend (Paulinho), Eriksen, Chadli, Kane.

Other contenders...

28/1/15 - Sheffield United 2-2 Spurs - Eriksen scores a worldy free-kick and then takes us to Wembley with a late goal in the snow in this League Cup semi-final.
7/2/15 - Spurs 2-1 Arsenal - Kane double in his first start in a NLD.
17/9/15 - Spurs 3-1 Qarabag - A certain Heung-Min Son scores twice on his home debut.
26/9/15 - Spurs 4-1 City - City torn apart as our young team starts to come of age.
10/12/15 - Spurs 4-1 Monaco - Lamela hat-trick as Monaco, including Mbappe, Lemar, Moutinho, Bakayoko and Bernardo Silva are beaten.
