10 for 10: Our games of the decade - 2017

Mon 30 December 2019, 14:37|Tottenham Hotspur

What a decade! Book-ended by incredible performances and hat-tricks in the Champions League, it’s been an amazing 10 years for the Club we all love – all culminating in the historic move to our world-class new stadium and the Champions League Final in 2019.

What games have defined the decade? There are too many to mention, from that triumphant night at the Etihad in May, 2010, to walking out at the Wanda Metropolitana in Madrid in June, 2019, via that night at the Amsterdam Arena and the opening of Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It’s a decade that has seen it all at Spurs and in this special festive feature over 10 parts, we’ve selected our matches of the past 10 years. It’s not a definitive list – as we all know, the game is about opinions – but here’s our take on the 2010s. Here’s to the 2020s!

10 for 10 - 2017

Spurs 2-1 Manchester United (Wanyama 6, Kane 48)
Premier League
White Hart Lane, 14 May, 2017

In a year that included victory over holders Real Madrid in the Champions League, there really is only one choice. Even if you don't remember too much about the game, you'll never forget the rainbow, the tears, the emotion. Yes, it's the Finale.

The 2,533rd and final game at White Hart Lane was unquestionably one of the most poignant and emotional matches not just of this, but of any decade in our history.

‘The Lane The Finale’ ended in a 2-1 victory against Manchester United thanks to goals from Victor Wanyama and Harry Kane, but it meant so much more than the three points. Our world-famous stadium had played host to its last-ever game as the curtain finally came down on 118 years of football at the venue.

Fittingly, the win ensured we stayed unbeaten at home throughout the entire 2016/17 season, something we hadn’t done since Bill Nicholson’s team of 1964/65 and meant we finished second in the Premier League behind winners Chelsea.

At the final whistle, emotions over-flowed as actor and Spurs fan Kenneth Brannagh narrated The Story of White Hart Lane on the big screens before a star-studded line up of former players took to the pitch for one last time. They were followed by the current first team squad and coaching staff, the occasion ending with a powerful rendition of Glory Glory Hallelujah as a rainbow appeared through the rain and the clouds to provide the most iconic of moments.

It was the end of an era – but the start of something special as we now sit at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and feel just as at home as we ever did before.

Team: Lloris, Trippier (Walker 83), Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies, Dier, Waynama, Son (Dembele 72), Dele, Eriksen (Nkoudou 90+1), Kane.

Other contenders...

30/4/17 - Spurs 2-1 Arsenal - victory in the final NLD at the Lane on our way to second place in the Premier League.
13/9/17 - Spurs 3-1 Borussia Dortmund - a superb win showed we'd moved forward in the Champions League after the disappointment of 2016/17.
