10 for 10: Our games of the decade - 2016

Sun 29 December 2019, 12:55|Tottenham Hotspur

What a decade! Book-ended by incredible performances and hat-tricks in the Champions League, it’s been an amazing 10 years for the Club we all love – all culminating in the historic move to our world-class new stadium and the Champions League Final in 2019.

What games have defined the decade? There are too many to mention, from that triumphant night at the Etihad in May, 2010, to walking out at the Wanda Metropolitana in Madrid in June, 2019, via that night at the Amsterdam Arena and the opening of Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It’s a decade that has seen it all at Spurs and in this special festive feature over 10 parts, we’ve selected our matches of the past 10 years. It’s not a definitive list – as we all know, the game is about opinions – but here’s our take on the 2010s. Here’s to the 2020s!

10 for 10 - 2016

Spurs 2-0 Manchester City (own goal 9, Dele 37)
Premier League
White Hart Lane, 2 October, 2016

2016 was quite a year. We beat City at the Etihad on Valentine's Day as we competed for the Premier League title, qualified for the Champions League for the first time in six years and, as our new stadium started to take shape, the second half of the year marked our final season at White Hart Lane.

Could we compete again? An early test against City at the Lane would tell us a lot. Now under the leadership of Pep Guardiola, City's record was perfect before this meeting in early October - six wins out of six.

But this was about us, our last season at the Lane and we were relentless. We simply wouldn't let City settle into their patterns of play with the high press working to perfection.

Aleksandar Kolarov sliced Danny Rose's cross into his own net after nine minutes, Heung-Min Son and Christian Eriksen tested Claudio Bravo and then, having won possession, Sonny set up Dele for 2-0 before the break. Erik Lamela missed a penalty in the second half. Sergio Aguero twice tested Hugo Lloris, but this was our day - all without Harry Kane!

The BBC's hugely-respected Chief Football Writer Phil McNulty described it as a 'big statement'. We went on to complete the season unbeaten at the Lane and only lost four in 38 on our way to second place and a Club Premier League best 86 points, eight ahead of City. Chelsea took the title after a run of 13-successive wins and 30 out of 38 over the campaign.

Team: Lloris, Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen Rose, Sissoko (Dier 72), Wanyama, Eriksen, Dele (Nkoudou 86), Lamela, Son (Janssen 90).

Other contenders...

14/2/16 - Manchester City 1-2 Spurs - Christian Eriksen's late winner kept us in the title race.
5/3/16 - Spurs 2-2 Arsenal - has the Lane ever been louder than when Harry Kane curled home for 2-1?
10/4/16 - Spurs 3-0 Manchester United - three goals in a thrilling seven-minute spell clinched this win.
2/5/16 - Chelsea 2-2 Spurs - the 'Battle of the Bridge'.
14/9/16 - Spurs 1-2 Monaco - the Champions League anthem returns, albeit in a loss at Wembley.
19/11/16 - Spurs 3-2 West Ham - Harry Winks' scoring debut and two late Harry Kane goals secure a win in West Ham's last visit to the Lane.
