It is hard to believe that this was the surface on which we won the Double! Views of White Hart Lane in the early Sixties when protecting the pitch consisted of holding down a large tarpaulin with weights and then a lot of hard physical work that sometimes ran to an appeal to local supporters to come in and help on the morning of the game.
The result was still a mud heap on which players in heavy leather boots were expected to manipulate a heavy leather ball. Yet it was obviously the same for both sides – and they did it wonderfully well.
