732 - Premier League passing record broken in Palace win

Mon 04 March 2024, 15:00|Tottenham Hotspur

We broke our record for most passes completed in a Premier League home game on Saturday afternoon as we made 732 in our 3-1 win over Crystal Palace.

Having seen Cristian Romero break the passing record for a Spurs player in a Premier League match in the reverse fixture - October's 2-1 win at Selhurst Park - the team have now set a new passing record for us in the top flight.

Despite falling behind to Eberechi Eze's free-kick just before the hour mark, we controlled proceedings at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as we enjoyed 78 per cent of possession, allowing us to go on and break the passing record.

It was then thanks to another late, late show in N17 that we were able to claim all three points from the clash - Timo Werner, Cristian Romero and Heung-Min Son all finding the target within 11 minutes of each other to get us back to winning ways.

Completing 732 passes at home against the Eagles on Saturday, it saw us beat a record we had actually set earlier on this campaign as we completed 717 in our 2-1 defeat to West Ham United in December. That return edged our previous best record of 701 made against Huddersfield Town in March, 2018 - a 2-0 win at Wembley Stadium.

In terms of both home and away returns, our 732 against Palace ranks as our second most in the Premier League era (since the data was first collected in 2003/04) behind our 747 recorded in a 3-0 win at Cardiff City on New Year's Day in 2019.

Highlights | Cardiff City 0-3 Spurs | January, 2019

Interestingly, when it comes to passes completed in a Premier League home game by us, the 10 highest returns have all come in the years since our saying farewell to White Hart Lane at the end of the 2016/17 season.

Coincidentally, two of the three Premier League hat-tricks we have scored since moving to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium sit within the list as well - Lucas Moura's against Huddersfield Town in April, 2019, and Gareth Bale's against Sheffield United in May, 2021.

While four of our top eight returns of passes completed in the Premier League - both home and away - have come under Ange Postecoglou, including two of our best three.
