United vs Spurs | Ben's players to watch, talking tactics with Rob

Sat 13 January 2024, 11:45|Tottenham Hotspur

Club commentator Rob Daly and Ben Haines, presenter of Inside Spurs, The Warm Up and The Review Show, take a look at Sunday's huge Premier League clash against United at Old Trafford (4.30pm UK).

Ben's players to watch

"Last time out against Burnley in the FA Cup, a bit of a slog, that one, but with the squad being pushed, great to get through to the next round and it's been great to see Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin come in this week. In terms of players to watch, for us, you would imagine Micky van de Ven making a return. That gives our game another dimension, his speed allowing us to play that defensive line higher and higher. On the United side, one thing that keeps coming back to me is watching Aston Villa dominate United in the first half at Old Trafford, look so strong, only for United to turn it around in the second half. Alejandro Garnacho was a massive part of that, and he's the one to watch. He has that fearlessness and supreme confidence that comes with being a young player. He's their shining light at the moment, not an out-and-out striker, plays between the lines, causing problems from different areas. All in all, great news that we've players coming back, two new arrivals meaning additional squad depth and, fingers crossed, we're not far away from everyone back and Ange Postecoglou having the biggest headache on who to select!

Rob's analysis

"United have been unbelievably inconsistent this season, and they've only scored 22 goals - 20 less than Spurs. However, I've commentated on them in a couple of recent games, including the win against Chelsea, and when they're at it, they can be really good at Old Trafford. On Boxing Day, they showed that quality by turning things around from 2-0 down against in-form Villa to win 3-2, Alejandro Garnacho was key that night playing on the right. If he's in that form, he'll cause problems. United will sit in a bit and look to counter. Part of the reason they had that joy against Villa was because they worked the ball in behind Villa's high defensive line and used the pace of Garnacho and Marcus Rashford. I think they'll look to do something similar against Spurs. It's also worth noting they were missing 12 players for their FA Cup tie against Wigan on Monday night, although Erik ten Hag has reported that a number of players could be back on Sunday. For Spurs, Gio Lo Celso and Ben Davies are out, so that's a couple of holes in the team. You'd expect to see Micky van de Ven back as the left-sided centre-back, Radu Dragusin is a right-footed defender, might he replace Emerson Royal and make his debut? I imagine Timo Werner will make his debut, maybe with Dejan Kulusevski back in the '10' role with Lo Celso out, Brennan Johnson and Werner wide and Richarlison through the middle. There are interesting team selections for Ange Postecoglou, but so encouraging to get two new players through the door before this huge game, and then two weeks to work with them at Hotspur Way before another huge game, Manchester City in the FA Cup (26 January, 8pm)."
